Primarily consisting of personal academic files and teaching materials, Robert Melcher's papers document his education at Oberlin College and his subsequent career as an academic there. The student course material (1931-1938) details Melchor's undergraduate and graduate work at Oberlin College, OH. Evidence of Melcher's teaching career at Ohio Northern University (1933-1936), and at Oberlin College (1937-1976) is found in the lecture notes, course outlines, and class exams kept in the course material-instructor series. An undated manuscript titled "Integrated Theory" also exists. This collection holds no material of a personal nature.

Robert A. Melcher (1910-1983) was born in Ottumwa, Iowa. He earned his B.M.E. and M.M.E. from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 1932 and 1940, respectively. Melcher also studied at the Teacher's College, Columbia University, Pius X School of Liturgical Music, Julliard School of Music, and at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecelia.
